The Morningside Club Championships took place yesterday at the centre and we had a fantastic turn-out with over 80 entries across all events. The day was played in great spirit with some fantastic tennis on display from open and junior players and we now have some new club champions to add to the prestigious list!
The premier events saw Cornel Mirciov defend his title in the Men’s Open Singles to win the Greg Fox Memorial trophy for the second year running. Cornel defeated Alex Power in a high-standard and hard-hitting final and showed why he represents Morningside in the Brisbane Tennis League and Supergrade 1 competitions with another classy display. The Brenda Dale Memorial trophy was this year won by Anna Wishink who defeated Benita Smith in another great final. Anna hails from Tasmania and was ranked inside the top 450 in the world only a few years ago. We’re very fortunate to have such a great player involved in the club and hope to see Anna on the courts at Morningside for years to come representing us at BTL level.
Other highlights of the day included a cracking over 40’s Men’s Singles Final between Owen Morgan and Albrecht Mueller which lasted over 2 hours and was finally decided in a tie-breaker that was won by Owen 16-14! We hope to see the guys back at the club in a month or two when they’ve recovered from the match…
Our premier junior events, the Open Boy’s and Open Girl’s singles were won by Matthew Hulme and Maddie Hampson. Matthew defeated his Morningside Magic teammate Lathan Treacy in a classy final while Maddie snuck home against her Lourdes Hill partner, Sarah Bowden.
