Round 1 of the Morningside Tennis Centre 2014 Summer League was held last night at the club and the turnout was sensational! 38 players of all standards started the New Year with a bang and there was some great tennis played in each of the leagues.
A big thanks to everyone who played last night and to Benita & Andreas for organising the event. There’s still three more rounds of action to go and anyone wanting to get involved and get some early year match play in is more than welcome – just give our staff a call on 07 3899 8110 and register your name. The cost is $15 per night.
FORMAT
All players are placed in leagues of either 3 or 4 players (based upon standard). Each player will play one set against the other players in their league (first to 6 games for 3 player groups, first to 4 games for 4 player groups). The winner of each league receives a prize each week and will move up a division the following week. The player who finishes last will move down a division the following week. Each player will be given an overall aggregate ranking based on their games won and lost – the top 3 players at the end of the competition will receive a Wilson Player Pack!
ROUND 1 WRAP-UP
Tuesday Night saw some fantastic tennis taking place at all levels. League 1 was a tight race with Dave Whalley eventually taking out the honours from Ken Barter on a countback with newcomer Craig Robertson just one point adrift. Rob Daley will be joining them in the top league next week after winning League 2 with Matt Webb in 2nd place. Christian Cortes was on fire in League 3 and will move up a division with plenty of confidence after blitzing the field without dropping a game all night. Jason Gent took out all of his sets in a tightly contested League 4 field and Darren Head won a couple of tie-breakers to take out League 5. John Gleeson will move up next week after a solid outing in League 6 and will be joined by the dominant Tony Tran who only dropped 2 games in League 7. League 8 was won by Laurie Boustead, Kate Pike took the honours in League 9 and Helen Boydell was on fire in League 10 and will move up.
After week 1 Christian Cortes leads the Club Aggregate on 116.00 points from John Gleeson and Tony Tran however all three of these guys will have to move up and face stiffer competition next week! Dave Whalley is currently the number 1 ranked player at Morningside after taking out the top division however he’ll be in for some tough competition next week with the return of some of our Supergrade players.
